I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary…
Jesus occupies most of the Apostles’ Creed. Right at the start, we find out why.
I believe…in Jesus
Before Jesus was born, the angel told Joseph, Mary’s fiance,
Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She wll give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:20-21).
Packer writes, “Jesus (Greek for Joshua, meaning ‘God is Savior’) is his proper name. It identifies him a a historical person, Mary’s son from Nazareth in Galilee, a Jewish ex-carpenter who worked for three years as a rural rabbi and was put to death by the Roman authorites about A.D. 30” (I Want to be a Christian Tyndale 1981, 46).
Christ
“Christ…is…an ‘office-title,’ identifying Jesus as God’s appointed savior-king for whom the Jews had long been waiting” (Packer, 46). In other words, this carpenter Jesus is the rescuer that God had promised centuries before.
His only Son
I have yet to find a belief system that hates Jesus. People generally seem to like Him. But during His life on earth He was a polarizing figure.
Jesus replied, ‘My Father never stops working, so why should I?’ So the…leaders tried all the more to kill him. In addition to disobeying the Sabbath rules, he had spoken of God as his Father, thereby making himself equal with God (John 5:17-18, New Living Translation 1996).
C.S. Lewis wrote,
A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would be a lunatic – ona level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Sonof God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon;or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great homan teacher. He has not left that open to us” (Mere Christianity cited in McDowell, Evidence that Demands a Verdict Campus Crusade for Christ, 1972, 367
Our Lord
As C.S. Lewis said in the quote above, if Jesus is who He says He is, the necessary conclusion is that He has the right to run every human life – and that is what Jesus followers have given Him permission to do with their individual lives.
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary
This line simply tells us how it happened that Jesus, both a human and God, was born. In the angel’s message to Joseph above we see the process described. Do we understand this? Of course not. How is it possible for the creation (me) to understand the Creator (God)?
Jesus of Nazareth, a human who was born and lived on earth, at the same time God who created and runs the universe. God in human form. God with skin on.
